do we want God or His blessings?

Do I desire God or His blessings?  As I am in the process of raising support and asking Him to bless my life and ministry, I am confronted with this question.  It seems like an important question to ask, and it keeps rolling around in my head.  When I consider my relationship with God, it can be easy to fall into the trap of desiring the things He promises that come as a result of having a close relationship with Him.  Do I want His joy, peace, love, and goodness more than I want Him?  It makes me think of a wife loving her husband because he gives her a house and car.  Surely the husband wants to give his wife a place to live and a car to drive, but he wants her to love him because of who he is, not what he can give her.  Did you know that among all other religions, the God of Christianity is the only god who asks man if he loves Him?  Scripture says that Jesus asked Peter three times whether or not he loved him.  The fact that God cares whether or not we love Him is crazy.  All other god’s throughout history have been angry with humans, and humans are trying to gain the god’s favor.  The true God, the I AM, wants you to love Him.  I think it is a feeling we can all relate to.   I challenge you to ask yourself—what do I desire from God?  His blessings, or simply to know Him more?  I pray that in all things, God brings me closer to Him.   Undoubtedly, the Giver is supreme to the gifts.

“The third time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you truly love me?’ Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, “Lord, you know all things, you know that I love you.’”
John 21:17
